Disposal of the Apprentices

It came to pass, after The Unit of Sky and Earth had been operating smoothly and with much success for many phases of the moon, that much of the routine drudgery and politik of The Unit and the Kingdom were getting the Techie down. It seemed to the Techie that all of the fun, and all of the exciting travel to other Empires, and all of the power lay with Sadim the Bully. Goldbird the Techie was left responsible for all of the outputs aided by his ally from the place under the world, Wizard Notpodes. Goldbird had no time to travel to other Empires, or even to the farthest corners of this Empire, except when the Bully needed him to go along for support of the tech and to help control the admin (The Bully feared the admin, although he hid his fear well and would never admit to it on pain of becoming one who never partakes of alcohol or tunics with leather patches). The Techie was content with his lot, but would sometimes wonder what might have been. At least, he would tell himself on darker days, I don't have to socialise with The Bully when work is over, and I can continue to avoid the meetings in the ale house where much rubbish is talked and grand but entirely impractical plans formulated.

One evening when Goldbird was relaxing in his abode after partaking of his repast there came an irritating scritching and scratching and tap tap tapping noise. On turning to look through the glass portal Goldbird was shocked and disturbed to see the grinning visage of an inebriated Sadim, having returned from 'important' discussions in the capital city of the Empire. Hiding his anger, which was considerable, the Techie invited The Bully into his abode to see what he wanted. More alcohol was what he wanted. That and a chance to rant, rave, bluster and bullshit about his next grand plan for domination of the world.

Retiring to the local hostelry (all the better to keep The Bully from contaminating his abode) the Techie took everything that The Bully said onboard. He laughed at the right times, preened the ego of The Bully, and generally had a desperately unhappy time. The Techie wondered why The Bully was so keen to share these ideas at this time, when he could have returned directly to his country retreat. The answer to this puzzle was soon revealed. The consort of The Bully had been dispatched to collect supplies from the Curry House. As soon as the consort had completed her task and was ready to transport The Bully to his country retreat the Techie was abandoned to return to his own abode.

This behaviour was repeated on many other occasions, but nothing of consequence was ever discussed. Thus the Techie learned that his role was forever to be in the shadow of The Bully and that The Bully had no respect for the views or happiness of those he dominated.
